# Google Index Status

The Google Index tab is where you find out whether the content you've published actually exists in Google's eyes. Publishing to your site is only half the journey — Google has to **discover**, **crawl**, and **index** each URL before it can rank or drive traffic. Most SEO tools assume that happens automatically. It often doesn't. This dashboard makes the indexing gap visible immediately so you can act on it.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Key Takeaways**

* Indexing is the bridge between "published" and "ranking" — without it, the rest of your SEO work is wasted
* Sage automatically submits every article to Google for crawl the moment it goes live
* The Per-URL detail table shows Google's verdict on every URL in your sitemap, refreshed on demand
* "Not indexed" usually means content needs strengthening, not technical fixes
* Filter pills let you focus on the URLs that actually need attention — usually <10% of your total
  {% endhint %}

## The crawl → index → rank funnel

  classDef stuck fill:#FFEBE6,stroke:#DE350B,stroke-width:1px,color:#091E42
  class A,B,C,D good
  class E,F good
```
Most articles get stuck somewhere in the middle. Sage's job is to show you exactly where each one is — and to act on the bottlenecks Sage can fix automatically (submission, re-inspection, content strengthening signals).
## What you see on the dashboard
### The coverage summary (top of page)
At-a-glance counts of where every URL in your sitemap stands today:
| Stage                       | What it means                                                                        |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Crawled**                 | Google has visited the URL at least once                                             |
| **Indexed**                 | Google included it in the index — eligible to rank                                   |
| **Ranking**                 | URLs currently showing in search results with measurable impressions                 |
| **Crawled but not indexed** | Google saw it and chose not to include it — usually means content depth is the issue |
The numbers stay live — Sage refreshes them on a schedule and you can force a fresh pull anytime.
### The Per-URL detail table
Every URL in your sitemap, one row each, with Google's current verdict. The most-used columns:
| Column                | What it tells you                                                      |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Status**            | Indexed · Not indexed · Pending · Awaiting inspection · Unchecked      |
| **Source**            | Sage AI (Sage-generated) vs External (pre-existing)                    |
| **URL**               | The exact page Google sees, with the URL slug                          |
| **Impressions (28d)** | How often this URL showed in search results in the last 28 days        |
| **Last crawled**      | When Google last fetched this URL                                      |
| **Verdict**           | Google's specific reason for the status (e.g. "Submitted and indexed") |
Click **Inspect** on any row to ask Google for a fresh verdict. The button shows a spinner while the check runs (usually 2–5 seconds) and the status pill updates inline.
## Filter pills — focus on what matters
The pills above the table let you slice the URL list by status. The two you'll use most:
* **Ranking** — URLs with impressions > 0. These are working. Don't touch them.
* **Not Indexed** — URLs Google saw but chose not to include. These are your action list.
The "Indexed but zero impressions" set is also useful — those URLs are in Google's index but not surfacing for any queries, usually a sign that the content isn't matching real search intent. Worth a content audit.
## The "Not Indexed" playbook
When an article is stuck at Not Indexed, that's the signal. Common causes + Sage's response:
```mermaid
flowchart TD
  A[Article stuck at Not Indexed] --> B{Why?}
  B -->|Thin content| C[Use Sage's enrichment to add depth: takeaways, FAQs, internal links, charts]
  B -->|Topic too competitive| D[Pivot to a less-saturated angle or consolidate with a related article]
  B -->|Low site authority| E[Focus on easier-win topics first; build internal link density]
  B -->|Technical block| F[Sage flags robots.txt / noindex issues in the detail panel]
  classDef root fill:#F0F6FF,stroke:#0052CC,stroke-width:2px,color:#091E42
  classDef action fill:#E3FCEF,stroke:#006644,stroke-width:1px,color:#091E42
  class A,B root
  class C,D,E,F action
```
In practice, the most common cause for newer sites is "content too thin to compete." That's exactly what Sage's enrichment pass is built for — see [Article Enrichment](/reference/article-enrichment.md) for what it adds and why.
## What Sage does automatically
You don't have to click anything for any of this to happen — it's all built into the publishing pipeline:
* **On every publish** — Sage tells Google about the new URL right away. See [Telling Google About New Articles](/reference/indexing-submission.md) for the methodology.
* **On a schedule** — Sage re-checks every URL in your sitemap so the dashboard stays current
* **Catches stuck articles** — anything that fails to index within a reasonable window surfaces in the "Not Indexed" filter for action
## What the verdicts mean for you
| Verdict                 | What's happening                                                    | What to do                                                                |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Indexed**             | Working. Google will show this in search results when topics match. | Nothing — let it earn rankings over time.                                 |
| **Not indexed**         | Google looked but didn't include.                                   | Strengthen the content. Sage's enrichment + internal links are your tool. |
| **Pending**             | Submitted, still being processed by Google                          | Recheck in a few hours.                                                   |
| **Awaiting inspection** | Sage hasn't checked yet                                             | Click **Inspect** to find out now.                                        |
See [Checking If Google Has Your Article](/reference/url-inspection.md) for the methodology behind each verdict.
## Why this matters more than people think
A site can publish dozens of articles and never see traffic if Google isn't indexing them. The Google Index dashboard is the only place you'll catch this fast — most analytics tools wait for traffic to materialize before flagging anything, and by then you've lost months.
A typical example: a brand-new domain publishes 30 articles in its first quarter. Without Sage's submission + monitoring, half of those wait 4–6 weeks for first crawl, and another quarter never get indexed at all. **With Sage's pipeline, those same 30 articles see their first indexing verdict within 24–72 hours, and the "Not Indexed" cohort is flagged immediately for content work — months earlier than the alternative.**
## Frequently asked questions
### Why are some URLs marked "Unchecked"?
Sage hasn't queried Google for their status yet. This happens with very new URLs (added to the sitemap but not yet inspected) or URLs that were added in bulk. Click Inspect to get a verdict immediately.
### How often does the data refresh?
The summary counters refresh several times a day. Per-URL status refreshes on a regular schedule + on demand via the Inspect button. Impressions are pulled from Google Search Console daily.
### Why is my impressions count zero for indexed pages?
"Indexed" means Google has the page in its index, but if it's not ranking on the first few pages for any query, it won't get impressions. This is normal for new articles — impressions usually start appearing within 1–4 weeks of indexing.
### What's the difference between "Inspect" and "Refresh All Data"?
* **Inspect** = ask Google for a fresh verdict on one specific URL
* **Refresh All Data** = pull the latest impressions + clicks from Google Search Console for every URL
Both are cheap; neither costs you anything beyond your normal GSC quota.
### Can I re-submit a URL to Google?
Sage automatically submits every article on publish — usually you don't need to manually re-submit. If you've made significant edits to a published article and want a fresh crawl, click Inspect to trigger one. For bulk re-submission across many URLs, contact support — there are quota considerations.
